3 Myths About Chiropractic

Chiropractors are not real doctors
Chiropractors (DCs) are among more than 50,000 practitioners in the U.S. They earn the title of “doctor” along with medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, and dentists. The educational process is very similar to that of a medical doctor. Chiropractic students study many of the same textbooks as medical doctors. In fact, a chiropractic student has more course hours in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, neurology, and nutrition than the medical student. Seven years of study is the minimum that a chiropractor will receive. Once a DC has graduated from Chiropractic College and passed their chiropractic board exams, they must pass a state licensing exam in order to practice.
Chiropractic care is dangerous
The safety of chiropractic care has been well documented in many professional journals. Serious side-effects of chiropractic treatments occur very rarely; not even one in a million adjustments. If we compare that number to the serious side-effects of prescription medicine it is minor. It is estimated that some 100,000 people die each year as a result of the side-effects caused by their prescription drugs. It has been reported that 51% of approved drugs have serious effects that are NOT detected until AFTER the drug has been approved. This does not mean that you should never take prescription medicine, but is merely a point to show that in all reality chiropractic care is very safe if the adjustment is given by a licensed chiropractor.
You have to keep going for the rest of your life
Chiropractic care is like “orthodontics” care for the spine. When you receive repeated chiropractic adjustments they “train” the vertebrae to maintain their proper alignment and movement. Just like the time required for braces to achieve correction on the teeth, the time required for correcting spine positioning can depend on the condition of the patient, their job, and other activities. I often tell patients that just like changing the oil in a vehicle or greasing a piece of machinery, your body also needs a tune-up. For some people they never know how good they can feel until they have been under chiropractic care. Once you know that, you don’t want to go back to feeling bad.
