Short Term Pain Relief / Long Term Problems

ATTENTION PREGNANT WOMEN!!!
If you’re PREGNANT we recommend you don’t take Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Recent research shows a link between pregnant ladies taking Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ADHD, which is attention deficit disorder. We have already known not to take NSAIDS and now have added Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to the list.

GOOD NEWS!! We at www.communitychiropractic.org have the answer for pregnancy pains. Dr. Kelly Garber and Dr. Megan Holley are both trained in the Webster Technique which is a specific treatment for pregnant women, and we also have massage therapists trained to massage women who are pregnant. If you are pregnant and suffer from back pain, neck pain, sleeping arms, tingling in your legs or have headaches, gives us a call at either of our locations. Our office numbers and locations are on our home page!

My Pregnancy

For all you pregnant ladies out there, I just wanted to take the time and explain my experience during pregnancy and what I’ve been doing  that I believe has enabled me to feel good throughout this time.

In the beginning, I made sure to start getting chiropractic check-ups if not every week then every two weeks. I did experience some morning sickness issues that lingered on for about four months.  What really helped was a combination of certain acupuncture/acupressure for morning sickness.  I was able to get temporary relief while utilizing some acupressure points during work but the acupuncture sessions of 20-30 min once a week helped for longwebster 003er lasting relief.

I had the Webster technique done throughout the entire pregnancy but began getting it done once a week when I started the third trimester.  Every baby appointment I have had they have been very impressed that I have had no issues with sciatica or baby positioning. The midwife has commented every visit in the third trimester that the baby has been staying in the most optimal position for a better labor for the baby and myself.

Massage is another tool that has been helping keep my feet under control.  As many know feet and ankle swelling is very common towards the later part of pregnancy which can make walking and being on your feet more challenging. Along with ankle and feet adjustments a 30 min massage for the low back and feet have been keeping me in good shape.

I am very thankful for every treatment and modality that has helped me through my first pregnancy. I truly have been able to enjoy being pregnant and it is a very rewarding feeling to be able to experience the opposite end of the spectrum, being the patient instead of being the chiropractor 🙂 I encourage all pregnant women to utilize every treatment option possible in order to be able to enjoy your pregnancy the way that I’ve been able to.

Exercises for Expecting Mothers

There have been some studies done on pregnant women that have actually demonstrated that your gait motion remains relatively unchanged during pregnancy.  However, there is an increased demand on certain muscles of the hip/pelvic region along with the ankle as well.  This increase in demand is a contributor to the increased discomfort many pregnant women experience in the low back, hip, and pelvic region.  For these reasons, it is even more important to incorporate some form of exercise and conditioning during your pregnancy to help with the stability of your pelvis, and to help with the aches and pains in low back/pelvic region.
Many women are familiar with Kegels and Pelvic Rocks.  Some additional exercises I personally like for myself are Clams and Wall Squats.

Pregnancy & Chiropractic

It is common for a pregnant mother to have back and hip pain.  We treat many mothers for this.  Part
of the reason for the pain is due to the postural changes the mother’s body goes through as the
baby grows.  The body also releases a hormone relaxin that “relaxes” all of her ligaments, causing
more instability.  Treatments can help with this discomfort, and they also can help with the baby’s
development and position.

I use the Webster Technique to adjust during pregnancy.  It is a specific adjustment to the mother’s
pelvis that benefits both mother and baby.  This technique takes additional training and certification
which I have accomplished. Many of our patients have had success in their pregnancy and delivery with these treatments.
